After years of waiting and hurdles, the Padme wedding dress has finally been added to the shop!
I first made one a long time ago as a commission request. I studied every photo, screenshot, fabric, scene, movie still, everything I could find to figure out each part and design. It took HOURS upon HOURS of sketching, sewing, testing, and trial and error to finally get a design down pat. In subsequent years, I made a few more Padme wedding dresses all entirely by hand. After I stopped taking commissions I continued to receive many requests, and it occured to me that maybe I can add it to the shop. Using my original patterns and notes, I've finally been able to set it into production!
The wedding dress comes in four parts: the gown, lace overlay, capelet, and veil. The gown originally had sleeves, and I moved it to the lace overlay. One of the best additions: the Padme wedding dress comes with pockets! Most wedding dresses don't have any and I was determined to add it; it's much more convenient to be able to have your phone to capture moments or to keep tissues or vows on hand.
Why doesn't it look exactly like in the movie? The original movie Padme wedding dress was made from an antique bedspread found in a thrift shop by the costume designer of the movie. With her team, they transformed the one-of-a-kind Edwardian bedspread into what we see in the movie. Finding the exact fabric and appliques (that they made from scratch) would be near impossible. To capture the the look, I followed the layout of the dress with specific patterns, fabrics, and unique details to make it recognizable as the one worn by Padme.
Did you know...?
Padme's maiden name was originally Naberrie. She later adopted Amidala as her name when she was elected as Queen of Naboo.
